Coming Up: 28th Feb - NIPA Round 5 Selection Night

Hi All,

Coming up this week is NIPA Round 5, the last NIPA competition round of the season. The theme is "Documentary", a challenging one at that and by definition it has to be an image that tells a story, much like the narrative round for those who were members last season. There is no reason why you can't enter these into this competition.

The usual format applies, 1 x colour print, 1 x mono print and 1 x pdi (1400px landscape, 1050px portrait and sRGB colour space)

PDI uploads available here.

Lets make a big effort for the last round and as always I look forward to seeing what everyone produces.

Thanks,

Barry Lau
Chairman

Coming Up: 14th Feb - Architectural Competition

Coming up this week is a competition round and the theme is "Architecture". This is an internal competition and is open to all members.

What sort of things are we looking for?

"Architectural photography is typically created from either the exterior views of buildings, or in the interior of buildings."

Exterior

Exterior architectural photography usually takes advantage of available daylight, or if performed at night, uses ambient light from adjacent street lights, landscape lights, exterior building lights, moonlight and even twilight present in the sky in all but the darkest situations.

In many cases, the landscaping surrounding a building is important to the overall composition of a photograph, and even necessary to communicate the aesthetic harmony of a building and its environment. An architectural photographer will often include flowers, trees, fountains or statues in the foreground of a composition, taking advantage of their ability to help lead the eye into the composition and to its main subject, the building.

Interior

Interior architectural photography can also be performed with ambient light transmitted through windows and skylights, as well as interior lighting fixtures. Frequently though, architectural photographers will use supplemental lighting to improve the illumination within a building. Either electronic flash "strobes" or incandescent "hot lights" can be used.

Ref: Wiki

The format will be the same as any NIPA round, 1 colour print, 1 mono print and 1 PDI.  Max mount size 40cm x 30cm, PDI's max width 1400px, max height 1050px.

We are also hoping to get an external judge in so get shooting! Who knows there might even be a great prize up for grabs!

Thanks,

Coming Up: 17th Jan - Studio Night with Barry Lau ARPS

Hi All,

Coming up this week is a hands on demonstration studio night with myself, Barry Lau ARPS.

We will be shooting a professional signed model Sarah McQuillian and this will be the perfect opportunity to get an overview of the full setup and how I work on a typical shoot.

I aim to cover everything from equipment used such as different lights and modifiers. Then show different setups and discuss how to direct the model to capture the various different looks.

You will then have the opportunity to put my demonstration into practice by photographing the model on your own so remember to bring your camera gear!

I understand that these kind of nights can be very intimidating. Especially when you feel under pressure when trying to work out settings etc. So please feel free to ask any questions throughout the night.

Thanks,

Barry

Coming Up: 13th Dec - Out and About

Hi All,

This week we opted for a taste of the festive season. Wrapped up in coats and hats we are venturing off into Belfast City Centre to visit the Continental Market. In light of making this a more "social" occasion we thought it might be fun to leave the serious kit at home and have some camerafone fun instead but should you bring your DSLR, this will be the perfect opportunity to gather some great photographs of the various stalls as well as experimenting with long exposures.

However, if you choose to leave your big camera gear at home, we will be running a camera phone competition for the best photo taken on the night.

Rules

  1. The image must be taken on a camera phone,
  2. Edited on the phone,
  3. Emailed to info@bpicni.com before midnight.

Who know's the winner might even win a prize!

This will be a bit of fun and should test everyone's skills when faced with a challenge :-)
